A Guide to Avoiding Sexual Harassment in Campus and the Workplace

On March 19, 2025, Oneworld Hanxin College invited gender equality and LGBT rights advocate Chong Yee Shan to speak on the topic “A Guide to Avoiding Sexual Harassment in Campus and the Workplace.”

Sexual harassment can happen anywhere — on campus, in the workplace, and even in everyday life. According to the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act, sexual harassment is defined as any unwanted behavior of a sexual nature directed at an individual, which may include verbal, non-verbal, visual, gestural, or physical acts. These actions are considered offensive, humiliating, or threatening to the person's mental or physical well-being.

In her talk, Chong Yee Shan shared several Malaysian laws related to sexual harassment, including the Employment Act 1995, the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and the Penal Code. She also highlighted the crucial role of power dynamics in sexual harassment cases — such as between superiors and subordinates, men and women, the dominant and the vulnerable, narcissists and those with low self-esteem.

Chong concluded by urging survivors of sexual harassment to seek help from women’s organizations like the Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO), counseling centers, and to file police reports when needed.
