August "Hanxin Lecture Series" | Dr. Seow Yuening Shares Korean History, Culture and Language

In August, Oneworld Hanxin College's "Hanxin Lecture Series" invited Dr. Seow Yuening to deliver a course titled "The Journey Through the Korean Peninsula: Four Lectures on Korean History, Culture, and Language," guiding the public beyond the surface of Korean pop culture to gain a deeper understanding of Korean history, customs, and language exchange.

Dr. Seow Yuening is a Penang native who has lived in Seoul for 22 years. He graduated from the Department of Chinese Studies at the University of Malaya and holds a PhD in Korean Language and Literature from Sungkyunkwan University. Currently, he is an Associate Professor at the General Education Center of Kwangwoon University.

When people think of Korea, many first think of K-dramas, K-pop, food, and pop culture. However, truly understanding Korea doesn't necessarily begin with pop culture. This course series will explore the history and traditional customs of the Korean Peninsula, as well as Korean-Chinese language exchange and modern social culture, presenting the public with the profound historical and cultural heritage behind pop culture.

The speaker will also offer a unique perspective from the viewpoint of the Malaysian Chinese community, tracing the centuries-long interaction between Korea and the Chinese-speaking world, allowing the public not only to "see Korea" but also to truly "understand Korea."

These four lectures cover an overview of Korean history, traditional Korean culture, the history of Korean-Chinese language contact, and modern Korean society and culture. Classes will be held on August 18th, 20th, 25th, and 27th, from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM online via Google Meet. The course has a registration fee of RM80 per person, with a minimum of 15 participants.
