Bee, the Soul Behind the Scenes | Throwback Highlights
This time, we are honoured to have invited our trusted director/executive director/first assistant director—Bee! to Oneworld Hanxin College to share with students the importance of "assistant directors.""The assistant director is the most rational yet gentle presence on set."
Director Bee showed students that:
In the behind-the-scenes team, the assistant director is not just the "commander" overseeing the overall situation,
but also the soul of the team, connecting the director, actors, various departments, and the rhythm of the set.
Through her sharing, students understood the true responsibilities of an assistant director:
• Overseeing the entire shooting schedule
• Maintaining order and rhythm on set
• Accurate communication with all departments
• Calmly handling any unexpected situations
Every step is an accumulation of experience, judgment, and resilience.
Director Bee said:
"One cannot be chaotic, one cannot stop, one cannot make a mistake."
This is the weight of responsibility for an assistant director.
The Step from Assistant Director to Director
Director Bee shared that the transition from assistant director to director is not just a title upgrade, but a shift in creative perspective.
"Anyone can become a director, but not everyone can be an assistant director."
An assistant director requires extreme rationality, extreme patience, and exceptional communication skills.
Becoming a director, however, requires learning to set aside rationality and begin telling stories with emotion and expressing ideas visually.
From "solving problems" to "telling stories."
This sharing session allowed many students to truly understand the difference between
behind-the-scenes personnel and "creators."
It's not just about technology, but about "humanity."
Director Bee also reminded everyone: Filmmaking is never a one-person battle, but a team effort.
Solving problems requires expertise,
but making things happen smoothly and getting the team willing to work together—relies on empathy and understanding.
This sharing session not only taught industry know-how but also instilled respect for behind-the-scenes personnel in the students and made them rethink the soft skills they will need on set in the future.
Thanks to Director Bee for the inspiration. We look forward to more students from Hanxin joining film sets, participating in production, and entering the industry in the future, becoming a powerful behind-the-scenes force that gives directors peace of mind, teams confidence, and allows works to shine.
