Documentary Screening and Post-Screening Forum for "Son of the Sea" on August 15th
Oneworld Hanxin College will host a preview screening and post-screening forum for the documentary film *Son of the Sea* on August 15th (Saturday) from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the college. The short documentary *Son of the Sea* begins with a case of male sexual harassment within the Malaysian Chinese education system, gradually returning to the director's own family, body, and memories. When the experiences of victims are transformed into news reports, social movements, and public images, how do those whispers, which cannot be fully contained in a headline, continue to exist in private life? The film attempts to explore the complex and subtle relationship between trauma, memory, and public narrative through documentary filmmaking.
This documentary is directed by local director Koh Kian Yao, who studied in Taiwan. Koh Kian Yao graduated from the National Taipei University of the Arts with a Master of Fine Arts degree. He works as a film critic and public culture writer under the pseudonym "Shade Messenger," and publishes literary works under the pseudonym "Jiong Shu." He has participated in the planning and production of arts and culture programs nominated for the Golden Bell Awards, and his novel has been signed by Mirror Literature. His work has long focused on gender, Chinese-speaking families, media narratives, and public issues, combining social concern with humanistic reflection.
Following the screening, director Koh Kian Yao of *Son of the Sea* will host a small post-screening forum with Lawrence Ong, a former international journalist. They will discuss how public events are viewed, organized, and disseminated from the perspectives of documentary filmmaker, participant, and journalist, respectively, and how personal experiences enter public narratives. They will also engage in dialogue with the audience.
This is a preview screening of the film, and video recording will be conducted on-site. The film touches on issues such as sexual harassment, school power, and family dialogue. Viewers are advised to consider their own circumstances before participating. Recording, filming, and screen retouching are prohibited during the screening.
Admission to this screening is free, but prior registration is required. We welcome public participation. Those interested can click here (https://tinyurl.com/SonoftheSeaDocumentary) to fill out the registration form.
