Golden Horse Award-winning documentary "From Island to Island" will be screened on July 24
The documentary "From Island to Island" is directed by Malaysian director Lau Kek-huat. It is based on the history of Taiwan as part of the Japanese Empire during World War II, and excavates and reconstructs Taiwan's forgotten memories during the war. The film traces the experiences of Taiwanese soldiers, military doctors, and Taiwanese who immigrated to Southeast Asia under the rule of the Japanese Empire.The film opens with a son asking his father a question. Through cross-generational dialogues, family letters, diaries and family images, it explores the complexity of Taiwan's historical memory and the existence and struggle of multiple identities in that era.
Oneworld Hanxin College, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Hokkien Association Youth Section and Centre For Malaysian Chinese Studies are honoured to jointly host this screening in Kuala Lumpur. "From Island to Island" won the Best Documentary and the Million First Prize at the 26th Taipei Film Festival, and won the Best Documentary and Best Sound Effects awards at the 61st Golden Horse Awards.

Time: 1pm to 7pm
Venue: Oneworld Hanxin College
The film is 5 hours long with a 10-minute intermission. After the screening, director Lau Kek-huat will be present to attend a 30-minute post-screening discussion to exchange filming process and creative ideas with the audience.
Director Lau Kek-huat was born in Sitiawan, Perak, and graduated from the Department of Film at the National Taiwan University of Arts with a bachelor's and master's degree from the university.
