The Creation and Future Prospects of Hong Kong Film
Renowned Hong Kong director Clifton Ko recently visited Oneworld Hanxin College to deliver an inspiring talk to students and film enthusiasts. The event, jointly organized by Oneworld Hanxin College and Hanxin Pictures, was titled “The Creation and Prospects of Hong Kong Cinema” and took place on Wednesday, June 4, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM in the college’s auditorium hall. The session drew a large audience eager to learn from one of Hong Kong’s most respected filmmakers.Clifton Ko, a distinguished figure in the Hong Kong film industry, is best known for his works such as The Mad Phoenix, I Have a Date with Spring, and the beloved Happy Ghost series. His creative portfolio spans film, theatre, and television, with a heartfelt storytelling style that resonates deeply with audiences. Drawing from his own experiences, Ko encouraged students to seize every opportunity to learn and grow. He shared that after graduating from high school at 18, he had no chance to attend university—but he never stopped moving forward. Instead, he actively sought out opportunities, taking on roles such as camera assistant, script supervisor, art assistant, and even editing film trailers—often unpaid—simply to gain experience and knowledge.
“Opportunities are not something you wait for; they must be earned,” Ko emphasized. His willingness to go the extra mile and take on any task, no matter how small, eventually paid off. By the time he directed Happy Ghost, he was fully prepared thanks to years of hands-on involvement and dedication. He urged young people to step up and give their best, whether they’re on stage or behind the scenes, as every quiet effort made today becomes the strength that supports future success.
This lecture not only provided valuable insights into the development of Hong Kong cinema but also left the audience deeply inspired by Director Ko’s journey of perseverance and proactive spirit.
